Upcoming Courses

There are many courses coming up in the South Eastern Area for those volunteers who wish to become coaches or officials.

Coaches are very important for athletics. The more coaches we have involved in our clubs the more athletes we can get involved in the sport. The coaching qualifications range from coaching assistant and leader, up to courses for volunteers to become a qualified Athletics coach. There are also coaching courses for Athletics Running Fitness.

Below are flyers that are specific to coaching assistant courses being held at Guildford Spectrum and Winchester Stadium. There is also a flyer for a leader in running fitness course being held at Winchester Stadium.

Officials are also crucial in the world of Athletics as without them competitions wouldn’t be able to happen. So if you’ve ever pondered the idea of becoming an Athletics official, please have a look at the upcoming courses. With more dedicated officials, competitions can run more smoothly. Courses are available for those who want to be on the field as officials or for those who prefer to be on the track as time keepers, starters or track judges. There are also Health and Safety and Risk Assessment courses.

All information in relation to the courses can be found on the flyers and course lists. Any queries, please e.mail Rebecca Turford at England Athletics.

Welfare Officer Workshop

Marilyn Parsons of Guildford and Godalming AC has kindly arranged a Child Protection workshop on Monday 10th March for club Welfare Officers.

It’s important to note that this talk is only available for nominated Welfare Officers of the network clubs and is not open to all. Club Welfare Officers must e.mail Christine Benning to reserve a place.

Thanks must go to Marilyn for arranging the evening and to Active Surrey who have provided a room to host it in.

Thanks to Active Surrey…

The Surrey Network would like to thank Vicki, Campbell, Lawrie and Suzannah at Active Surrey for working in partnership with us to help support recent activities.

Thanks to them the England Athletics Athlefit Training Course was a success last May. This has now resulted in numerous Athletfit sessions taking place throughout the Network area.

We are also grateful for their support with regards to the recent Diagnostic Day held on the 8th December. Thanks to them online bookings for the course could be carried out which was a large contributing factor to the success of the day.

The Supporting Coaches Workshop set up by Suzannah last year has ensured that our network athletics clubs are now involved in the Satellite club programme. Final thanks to Lawrie who has continued to support our Network and worked collaboratively on the programme of workshops.

We look forward to continue working in partnership with you and hope it can be long standing.

Thank you,

Everyone at the Surrey Network.

First Aid Course – 25.1.2014

First Aid Course Booklet First Aiders are essential for competitions and training to take place in athletics, so it was great to see a full house of 24 volunteers turn up to the First Aid Course held at Camberley on 25th January. Run by Brian from Myosis, volunteers from Walton AC, Guildford and Godalming, Camberley District and various running clubs from outside the network came together to either become First Aiders or to reinforce their First Aid training.

General sports First Aid was covered including how to deal with broken bones, anaphylactic shock, practice of CPR, correct recovery position and examinations of medicinal administers.

Wendy Letheby from Walton AC said “It was a good refresher course.. Not much has changed since I did my initial course, but it was good to reinforce my knowledge of First Aid which helps me feel more confident should a situation arise. The tutor was very good at involving everyone.”

Booklets were handed out on the day, but official certificates should be issued shortly.

Special thanks to Camberley and District AC for hosting the course. Keep your eyes peeled for the next First Aid course date to appear.
